Red Hammer is a nonprofit committee that is part of The Troth, that provides disaster relief and humanitarian aid to people who have been devastated by natural disasters and other tragedies.

Help comes in the forms of monetary assistance, clothing, food, as well as spiritual needs. The Red Hammer identifies situations and coordinate monetary aid to organizations that will be serving the direct needs of the communities effected.

Institutions whose mission is to heal, feed or comfort people in times of trouble become overwhelmed during disasters. Without additional funding to help them, they can’t hire more staff to address increased demand for their services.

The Red Hammer committee identifies those institutions that need financial support, coordinates collective fundraising from the inclusive Heathen Community and then delivers those funds to the institution in need.

Why Give to the Red Hammer

Gift Giving is at the heart of inclusive Heathenry, and it’s time people knew it. While we may donate individually, donating collectively through the Red Hammer shows that we as a religious community are active and engaged in the world around us. We are not to be feared or hated; rather, that inclusive Heathens, Norse Pagans, Asatruar, Urglaawer, Anglo Saxon Heathens… are a part of the world community and we are here to help our neighbors in their hour of need.

The Red Hammer sets a funding goal of $3000 to be delivered to the Maui Food Bank in response to the Maui Wildfires of 2023.

BACKGROUND (via Wikipedia summary): In early August 2023, a series of wildfires broke out in the U.S. state of Hawaii, predominantly on the island of Maui. The wind-driven fires prompted evacuations, caused widespread damage, killing at least 115 people and leaving 388 others missing in the town of Lāhainā.

For the Lāhainā fire alone, the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimated that over 2,200 buildings had been destroyed, overwhelmingly residential and including many historic landmarks in Lāhainā. The damage caused by the fire has been estimated at nearly $6 billion.

OUR RESPONSE: The Troth, via the Red Hammer Charity, has created a special fund restricted to donations for the wildfires which ravaged Lahaina and other parts of Maui, Hawaii, US. Donations go to Maui Food Bank.

FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE TROTH, LAUREN CROW: In August 2023, much of the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui and surrounding areas burned to the ground due to a rapidly spreading wildfire. Many Native Hawaiian Kanaka Maoli people have lost their homes, artifacts, native plant medicines, and community hubs such as the Na ‘Aikane o Maui Cultural Center. While nothing can replace what is lost, we can help with the immediate needs of those affected. Inclusive Heathenry is centered on building strong communities, and through your donation via Red Hammer, we can assist with helping feed those who are displaced until such a time as they can rebuild.

OUR ASK TO YOU, THE HEATHEN COMMUNITY: That we as Heathens resolve to share our resources so the residents of Maui suffering from the devastation of these wildfires can have some sense of food stability in a time when everything else has been taken from them. The Maui Food Bank is a trusted community institution in need of support because of the disaster.

WHY THE RED HAMMER: Gift Giving is at the heart of inclusive Heathenry, and it’s time people knew it.
