The Troth mourns Dr. Anthony Faulkes, who passed away on March 18 at the age of 86.

Dr. Faulkes was an internationally recognized scholar in the field of Norse Studies. Probably best known to Heathens for his translation of Snorri Sturluson’s prose Edda, renowned for both its accuracy and its completeness, he also collaborated with Alison Finlay on an equally excellent translation of Heimskringla and authored multiple scholarly works. For many years, he was the primary editor for the Viking Society for Northern Research and worked tirelessly to advance their goal of producing low-cost, top-quality editions of important texts.

He was also largely responsible for the Viking Society’s initiative to make most of its publications, including his own works, available online for free download (http://vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/).

In recognition of his contributions to education and scholarship, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon by the President of Iceland in 1992.

Modern Heathenry owes Dr. Faulkes an incalculable debt for his academic work and for his enduring efforts to make scholarly resources available to everyone.

May his name be long remembered!
