SUMMARY:Heathenry Essentials Study Group
DESCRIPTION:7 October\, 2023 – 4:00 PM UTC– 7 October\, 2023 – 6:00 PM UTC\n4 November\, 2023 – 4:00 PM UTC– 4 November\, 2023 – 6:00 PM UTC\n2 December\, 2023 – 4:00 PM UTC– 2 December\, 2023 – 6:00 PM UTC\n6 January\, 2024 – 4:00 PM UTC– 6 January\, 2024 – 6:00 PM UTC\n\n\n\nAbout the Heathenry Essentials Study Chats\n\nWelcome to Heathenry (also known as Asatru). \nPerhaps you are beginning your journey as a Heathen. You may have friends or family that have become Heathen and you’d like to know more about it. It is our hope that\, as you work through the readings\, essays\, and sample questions\, you will develop a fuller understanding of Asatru and what it means to be Heathen in a modern context. This is a free resource available to the public as part of our continuing mission to educate and to serve. You can take this course without a membership in The Troth so that you can learn more about the basics of our faith. \nHow the Heathenry Essentials Study Chat Works\nThe first 60 to 90 min will be a discussion of the current subject chosen by those who attend the chat\, focused on the area of their interest. \nThis part will be recorded.  After the focused study chat\, the remaining time will be open for social hour. This part is not required to attend for participation in the study group\, you can drop off if you’d like.  This portion will not be recorded.  If being recorded causes privacy to be a concern\, feel free to join with the video blocked\, or an attendee can put up a neutral picture in their free Zoom account. Attendees can change their names to a code name and use the chat feature if speaking and having their voice heard or recorded may be a concern. \nBy joining the zoom meeting for the chat part\, you are consenting and agreeing that you are aware the zoom chat will be recorded and posted to YouTube for students in the program. By joining\, you are demonstrating that you consent to this. \nAll who join the room first enter the waiting room and then are admitted into the zoom room by the host. Upon entering the waiting room\, each attendee is auto-set to join with their video and mic turned off so they can choose how they wish to present themselves. (To set their video/picture choices manually). This is also done in case when people who enter the chat after the start time can still join without disturbing the class. A student can join the chat/social at any time while the zoom room is open and active. \nIf not speaking\, please keep your microphone muted. This keeps background noise down and stops switching of the focus of the video off the speaker. Those leaving their mic on and having background noise disturbing the chat will first be requested to turn off-mic; the host may and will mute those who do not comply. For repeated offenses\, the person will be removed from the chat by the host. \nAll entering the chats agree to comply with The Troth’s position on Frith and inclusiveness:\n “The Troth takes great pride in being an organization that welcomes all people without judging them. We believe that no matter what a person’s religious or cultural background\, ancestral background\, physical ability\, gender identity\, or sexual orientation may be if the Gods and Goddesses called to them\, they are welcome.”  \nUnless actively speaking\, please keep your mic muted. \nThis course is taught in English. \nIf any questions\, please email heathenessentials@thetroth.org \nFor Troth Members: there is a Discord chat for the Heathen Essentials Study Group on the Troth Discord to continue conversations\, ask questions\, and have a study community. \nFor non-Troth Members: There is a voluntary mailing list for the Heathen Essentials Study Group to continue conversations\, ask questions\, and have a study community. Troth members who prefer not to use discord may also join the mailing list. \nAdd this recurring event to your calendar\nPlease download and import the following iCalendar (.ics) files to your calendar system. SUMMARY:LA/OC Pagan Pride Day | Hallowed Horn Kindred & The Troth
DESCRIPTION:Join Hallowed Horn Kindred at LA/OC Pagan Pride Day on October 8th at Rainbow Lagoon in Long Beach.\nThe Troth will be represented there among many other Pagan faiths for what looks to be a beautiful day in Southern California! \nAbout Hallowed Horn Kindred\nHallowed Horn is a “kindred rooted in celebration and service\, open to all who seek to honor our Gods with worthy word.” \nAbout LA/OC Pagan Pride\nFrom the website. \n\n\n\nIn July 1999\, after the U.S. House Representative of Georgia\, Bob Barr issued a press release titled: “BARR DEMANDS END TO TAXPAYER-FUNDED WITCHCRAFT ON AMERICAN MILITARY BASES.” Selene Silverwind and Brian Ewing decided that Los Angeles Pagans needed an event to come together and celebrate our presence.  \nWe discovered the Pagan Pride Project organization in its third year\, planning approximately 35 events around the country to coincide with Mabon\, the autumnal equinox. We joined the Pagan Pride Project initiative with very little time to prepare and held our first Pagan Pride Day event on September 19\, 1999.  \nThe event received tons of help from dedicated volunteers and attracted 150 attendees\, including local LAPD officers. The officers who attended came away from the event with a new understanding of Pagans and paganism. And where heard frequently commenting that we were “all so nice.” \nAfter the massive success of our debut event\, Pagan Pride LA/OC was incorporated as a non-profit organization in November 2000.  \nWe knew Pagan Pride Day 2000 would need a larger venue. Our third coordinator\, Mysti Rosewind\, was instrumental in planning our second Pagan Pride event at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Long Beach\, CA.  \nIt was attended by over 700 people and received news coverage in two major daily Los Angeles county newspapers. \nBy the following year\, the Pagan Pride Project had spread throughout the country and internationally. Pagan Pride events had sprung up in Rome\, the United Kingdom\, Brasilia\, and Sao Paulo. \nLocally\, Pagan Pride Day 2001 was a sorrowful event\, occurring in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy. We gathered over 200 people at Balboa Park in San Diego\, CA\, and hosted a memorial and healing ritual for the families suffering from their loss. \nBy 2002\, the nation was still recovering from such a painful moment in our history. But Americans from all walks of life were also starting to unite in the spirit of togetherness. And perhaps it was this same spirit of unity that brought almost a thousand people to our Pagan Pride Day event that year. \nPagan Pride Day 2002 hosted fifty vendors and organizations\, eight performers\, eleven authors\, and ten workshops at Whittier Narrows in El Monte\, CA. The main ceremony was performed by the Covenant of the Goddess SoCal chapter\, as arranged by Raven’s Flight\, with awe-inspiring and soulful rituals conducted by the Raven’s Cry Grove and the Ancient Keltic Church. \nThe Pagan Pride Project\, Inc. currently stands at over 100 planned events in the United States\, Canada\, South Africa\, Australia\, Brazil\, Italy\, Great Britain\, and Portugal.  \nToday\, Pagan Pride LA/OC hosts one of the nation’s largest Pagan Pride Day festivals. It’s the one day of the year when Pagans can come together in one place to celebrate our diversity and raise awareness of pagan religions in our society. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Venue\, Rainbow Lagoon Park\nFrom the website. \nLocated north of Shoreline Drive\, between Shoreline Village Drive and Linden Avenue\, this park is the remnant of Rainbow Lagoon by Auditorium Park before the lagoon was filled for the Long Beach Arena. Rainbow Lagoon is designed in a traditional Japanese style with two connected islands and surrounding park with high arched “rainbow bridges.” The area is turf\, with accenting trees. The Hyatt Hotel built its pool deck to the Lagoon edge. Rainbow Lagoon is filled with seawater\, and maintained at park level\, above sea level\, through pumps. The pumps and tide gates were replaced in 2004.

SUMMARY:Virtual Haustblót | Service | The Troth
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 15\, at 4 p.m. Eastern U.S. time (20:00 UTC)\, Reverend Maire Durkan will host a virtual Haustblót (Autumn Ritual) honoring Thor\, Sif\, Freyr\, Gerdr and Idunn.\nThis is a ritual for Heathens around the world who find themselves without a practice-group to celebrate the holidays\, or are traveling\, serving abroad or otherwise can’t make it back for a holiday celebration. It’s also for those of you who are just curious about the faith and want to see what we do. \nHausblot marks the end of the Harvest Holy Tide\, a time of great celebration\, abundance and sharing our propsperity with others. \nIf possible\, have ready an offering of fruit or grain for your home altar.  \nFor more on how to perform a Blot\, including a tutorial on virtual Blot and the history of Blot\, we have written an article describing it in detail. \nThe host\, Maire Durkan\, is a Friggswoman\, an ordained Godsperson by The Troth\, and a witch in the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel tradition.\nHer spiritual work is deeply informed by her connection to deity\, ancestors\, and weal-working wights\, and is deeply rooted in both of her spiritual traditions. She is also a children’s book author\, poet\, teacher\, and birth and postpartum doula. She lives with her amazing husband Patrick (of 37 years)\, the youngest contingent of their nine children\, a trio of spoiled felines\, and four pet chickens\, near the beautiful Brandywine River Valley of Northern Delaware.

SUMMARY:Open Online Álfablót 2023 (First Sacrifice of Winter Nights)
DESCRIPTION:The Troth Open Online Álfablót 2023 (First Sacrifice of Winter Nights)\nWe will be broadcasting this ritual live on Twitch\, YouTube and Facebook at 1900 UTC (1500 EST)\nAlfablót is the ritual that opens the Heathen Holy Tide of Winter Nights. It is a Blót (Sacrifice) to the Álfar (Elves). \n  \n \n  \nYou can learn more about the Elves and what we believe about them here in our section on Spirits. \nIn short\, Elves are powerful spirits in this world who settle in particular places like graves\, grave-mounds and other kinds of holy or hallowed ground. Today\, Álfar is used by most Heathens as a term for their male ancestors. The historical practice of Heathenry didn’t have such a strong affiliation and used that term Álfar in that more general sense of a powerful spirit that resided in a holy place. \nWinter Nights is a Holy Tide (a period of a few days between different phases of the moon) where we remember our beloved dead\, reflect on our own lives and the meaning of love\, loss and memory. It’s the “after-party” after the wild times we had during the Harvest Holy Tide\, where our thoughts begin to turn inward. \nThis will be a virtual event hosted by our President and CEO\, Lauren Crow\, who will conduct the ritual for the benefit of any Heathens who want to be a part of a Winter Nights ritual but just don’t have a means to do it themselves or people who are just curious as to how a Blót looks and how people do them. \nFrom the Event Description:\n“Winter Nights/Vetrnætr” is a holy tide we celebrate in Asatru/Heathenry/Norse Paganism at the end of the fall season and the beginning of the “Winter Nights.” Winter Nights is mentioned by the medieval Icelandic historian Snorri Sturlusson as one of the three major holidays on the Pre-Christian calendar in his chronicle “Hiemskringla” alongside Sigrblót (“Victory Sacrifice”\, celebrated between Spring and Summer) and Yule (celebrated on Midwinter moon\, the first full moon after the new year).\nÁlfablót isn’t a “holiday” as much it is “a thing one does during the Holy Tide of Winter Nights.”\n\nSome Heathens think of it as an offering for one’s male ancestors. Others think of it as an offering to honor the protective spirits of that land and community (as opposed to the protective spirits of the family)
