You can take this course without membership in The Troth to learn more about the basics of our faith. \nHow the Heathenry Essentials Study Chat Works\nThe first 60 to 90 min will be a discussion of the current subject chosen by those who attend the chat\, focused on the area of their interest. \nThis part will be recorded.  After the focused study chat\, the remaining time will be open for social chat. This part is not required to be attended for participation in the study group\, you can drop off if you’d like.  This portion will not be recorded.  If being recorded causes privacy to be a concern\, feel free to join with the video blocked\, or an attendee can put up a neutral picture in their free Zoom account. Attendees can change their names to a code name and use the chat feature if speaking and having their voice heard or recorded may be a concern. \nBy joining the zoom meeting for the chat part\, you are consenting and agreeing that you are aware the zoom chat will be recorded and may be posted to YouTube for students in the program. By joining\, and participating you are demonstrating that you consent to this. \nAll who join the room first enter the waiting room and then are admitted into the zoom room by the host. You may have friends or family that have become Heathen\, and you’d like to know more about it. We hope that\, as you work through the readings\, essays\, and sample questions\, you will develop a fuller understanding of Asatru and what it means to be Heathen in a modern context. This is a free resource available to the public as part of our continuing mission to educate and to serve. You can take this course without membership in The Troth to learn more about the basics of our faith. \nHow the Heathenry Essentials Study Chat Works\nThe first 60 to 90 min will be a discussion of the current subject chosen by those who attend the chat\, focused on the area of their interest. \nThis part will be recorded.  After the focused study chat\, the remaining time will be open for social chat. This part is not required to be attended for participation in the study group\, you can drop off if you’d like.  This portion will not be recorded.  If being recorded causes privacy to be a concern\, feel free to join with the video blocked\, or an attendee can put up a neutral picture in their free Zoom account. Attendees can change their names to a code name and use the chat feature if speaking and having their voice heard or recorded may be a concern. \nBy joining the zoom meeting for the chat part\, you are consenting and agreeing that you are aware the zoom chat will be recorded and may be posted to YouTube for students in the program. By joining\, and participating you are demonstrating that you consent to this. \nAll who join the room first enter the waiting room and then are admitted into the zoom room by the host. The broader inclusive pagan communities and interfaith allies are welcome to participate as well.\n\n\n\n\nInternational Relations and Exchange was founded as a program to facilitate and support international collaboration and education by creating Frith Forge\, an international conference for inclusive Heathens. We didn’t just find groups that shared our values\, but groups that had already started this work overseas\, with long histories of their own\, struggles of their own\, and problems that we could solve better together than apart. We continue to nurture these lasting alliances\, and true friendships. We value the chance to participate in such high quality educational and frithful exchange. Maire Durkan for a Mothers’ Night Celebration to begin our Yule celebrations for 2023! \n<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/AFT8F3Yze8g?si=wKlCNKtbyeMXYeT9″ title=”YouTube video player” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share” allowfullscreen></iframe> \nYule and Midwinter\nAccording to Bede\, the first night of Yule was “Mother Night\,” the night before the winter solstice (i.e. either the 19th or 20th of December\, depending on the year). It’s fairly common among modern Heathens to begin celebrating Yule on Mother Night (sunset on December 19) and end twelve nights later on New Year’s Eve (December 31). This has the advantage of fitting the secular holiday season well\, which may make it easier to get some free time to celebrate the holiday. \nWe don’t know much more about “Mother Night” than the name that Bede gives\, but modern Heathens often feel that this is the night to honor the family dísir\, the women ancestors who still ward their living kin. It’s possible that the name is also a reminiscence of the Matronae\, the goddesses or wights worshipped in Roman times along the Rhine. Since Roman soldiers from the Rhineland are known to have brought the cult of the Matronae to Britain\, and since at least some Rhineland Franks seem to have settled in England along with the Angles and Saxons\, it’s not impossible that a memory of the Matronae could have passed to the early English. \nScandinavia may have celebrated Yule somewhat later. Hákonar saga góða 13 describes how Hákon tried to uphold Christianity in his country\, although in the end he did not succeed: \n\nHann setti þat í lǫgum at hefja jólahald þann tíma sem kristnir menn\, ok skyldi þá hverr maðr eiga mælis ǫl\, en gjalda fé ella\, en halda heilagt\, meðan ǫl ynnisk. En áðr var jólahald hafit hǫkunótt\, þat var miðsvetrar nótt\, ok haldin þriggja nátta jól. \nHe established in law that Yule would be held at the same time as the Christians\, and then everyone had to have a measure of ale [i.e. brew ale from a certain measure of malt] or else pay a fine\, and keep the holiday as long as the ale lasted. But previously\, Yule was held at hǫkunótt\, which was Midwinter Night\, and three nights of Yule were celebrated. \n\nThis would be more helpful if we knew what hǫkunótt actually meant. Jan de Vries reviews doubtful suggestions that hǫku- might be connected with words for “witch” or “slaughter\,” and also suggests a link with haki\, “hook\,” since this is the time when winter “hooks” or “rounds the turn” from its first half to its second half. Whatever its origin\, de Vries identifies it as January 12\, which would be near the exact midpoint of the winter half of the year in the Icelandic calendar\, at least before the Gregorian reforms (Altnordisches Etymologisches Worterbuch\, p. 280). The name survives in Danish høgenat and Swedish hökenatt\, but Swedish hökenatt is defined as the longest night of the year\, or in other words the winter solstice (Dalin\, Ordbok\, vol. 1\, p. 751). \nIn Shetland and in parts of Norway\, work had to stop on December 20\, St. Thomas’s Day. In Shetland\, knitting and sewing could continue until December 24\, but after that\, no household work could be done for the next twelve or sometimes 24 days (Marwick\, The Folklore of Orkney and Shetland\, pp. 118-119).

You may have friends or family that have become Heathen and you’d like to know more about it. It is our hope that\, as you work through the readings\, essays\, and sample questions\, you will develop a fuller understanding of Asatru and what it means to be Heathen in a modern context. This is a free resource available to the public as part of our continuing mission to educate and to serve. You can take this course without a membership in The Troth so that you can learn more about the basics of our faith. \nHow the Heathenry Essentials Study Chat Works\nThe first 60 to 90 min will be a discussion of the current subject chosen by those who attend the chat\, focused on the area of their interest. \nThis part will be recorded.  After the focused study chat\, the remaining time will be open for social hour. This part is not required to attend for participation in the study group\, you can drop off if you’d like.  This portion will not be recorded.  If being recorded causes privacy to be a concern\, feel free to join with the video blocked\, or an attendee can put up a neutral picture in their free Zoom account. DESCRIPTION:We invite the members of The Troth to join us for a special presentation brought to you by the Interfaith Committee on Cultural Appropriation and Spiritual Genocide.\n \nCultural Appropriation is a difficult topic in Pagan spaces. On the one hand\, it’s difficult because there are many vested interests in obscuring its meaning and minimizing its impact on other faiths; on the other hand\, it’s can be used as a weapon by white people to destroy other white people. \nThe Troth isn’t immune from this. Many members\, even those who have held offices with The Troth\, have been accused of cultural appropriation. But what does that mean? And are we centering the experiences of those whose cultural is being appropriated? \nIn order to create good policy for our organization and our members\, we need to have the conversation to explore this topic by understanding its real impact on religious communities. \nIn this presentation\, livestreamed with Q&A for Troth Members only (and recorded and broadcast to the general public)\, we will all learn about what Cultural Appropriation is\, why some refer to it as Spiritual Genocide\, and what interfaith opportunities exist to restore trust and solidarity with Indigenous Religions.\nWe will go through real examples of this Spiritual Genocide\, Cultural Appropriation and talk about how each effects Indigenous religious communities. We will talk about some general principles of what to avoid when encountering Indigenous faith traditions. Finally\, we will talk about how we support our Indigenous friends and neighbors and their quest to restore their religious traditions\, defend their treaty rights and join their struggle for human rights. \nAs this event has to do with sensitive subject matter\, we will have a closed members only audience for the live broadcast and the Q&A session\, but as it’s also important subject matter for the general community\, we will be sure to record it for public viewing. \nPresented by:\n \nSheldon Noel\nLanguage teacher\, Professor\, Pipe Carrier\, Spiritual and Cultural teacher\nSheldon has addressed cultural sensitivity for politicians\, corporations and community members. Speaking at public and private events around the twin cities and around the world. Sheldon has given voice to the struggle and teachings of his people.\nShane Orthmann\nGothi with Daughters and Sons of Yta\nApart from his place in the twin cities heathen community Shane grew up as hereditary Sami with family teachings and worldview. He is currently a member of the North American Sami Siida. He came up as part of Anti-Racist Action\, an anti fascist street movement from the 1990’s. He participated in struggle as a member of Earth First! alongside the American Indian Movement in Minneapolis. As a heathen he has been invited to participate in discussion around decolonizing White Identity.

DESCRIPTION:The Troth Open Online Álfablót 2023 (First Sacrifice of Winter Nights)\nWe will be broadcasting this ritual live on Twitch\, YouTube and Facebook at 1900 UTC (1500 EST)\nAlfablót is the ritual that opens the Heathen Holy Tide of Winter Nights. It is a Blót (Sacrifice) to the Álfar (Elves). \n  \n \n  \nYou can learn more about the Elves and what we believe about them here in our section on Spirits. \nIn short\, Elves are powerful spirits in this world who settle in particular places like graves\, grave-mounds and other kinds of holy or hallowed ground. Today\, Álfar is used by most Heathens as a term for their male ancestors. The historical practice of Heathenry didn’t have such a strong affiliation and used that term Álfar in that more general sense of a powerful spirit that resided in a holy place. \nWinter Nights is a Holy Tide (a period of a few days between different phases of the moon) where we remember our beloved dead\, reflect on our own lives and the meaning of love\, loss and memory. It’s the “after-party” after the wild times we had during the Harvest Holy Tide\, where our thoughts begin to turn inward. \nThis will be a virtual event hosted by our President and CEO\, Lauren Crow\, who will conduct the ritual for the benefit of any Heathens who want to be a part of a Winter Nights ritual but just don’t have a means to do it themselves or people who are just curious as to how a Blót looks and how people do them. \nFrom the Event Description:\n“Winter Nights/Vetrnætr” is a holy tide we celebrate in Asatru/Heathenry/Norse Paganism at the end of the fall season and the beginning of the “Winter Nights.” Winter Nights is mentioned by the medieval Icelandic historian Snorri Sturlusson as one of the three major holidays on the Pre-Christian calendar in his chronicle “Hiemskringla” alongside Sigrblót (“Victory Sacrifice”\, celebrated between Spring and Summer) and Yule (celebrated on Midwinter moon\, the first full moon after the new year).\nÁlfablót isn’t a “holiday” as much it is “a thing one does during the Holy Tide of Winter Nights.”\n\nSome Heathens think of it as an offering for one’s male ancestors. Others think of it as an offering to honor the protective spirits of that land and community (as opposed to the protective spirits of the family)
